Mr robot, a call for poetic revolution

Mr Robot became available on Netflix USA, and it was a good opportunity to rewatch. The show has been a fan favorite, with complex storytelling, spectacular cinematography, superb acting and an acute description of reality.

The song choices and every detail in the show invites you to connect to the characters, to realize with them things about themselves, about society, about yourself.

As software engineers and hackers, the show captivates with the mostly correct cybersecurity elements of the plot, social engineering, kali linux in a vm, mocking the suits.

Systems, social structures, hierarchies and offshore accounts, trauma, pain and love.

There’s not much I can say that hasn't been said, but I wanted to share this final monologue by Elliot. I don’t think it counts as spoilers, understanding the process of his realization is a journey worth embarking on multiple times.

During therapy and some cutscenes, Elliot seemingly breaks the fourth wall, and uses monologues to invite us into his world, unique to him, feeling so isolated from the rest of society.

“A world built on fantasy! Synthetic emotions in the form of pills. Psychological warfare in the form of advertising. Mind-altering chemicals in the form of food. Brainwashing seminars in the form of media. Controlled isolated bubbles in the form of social networks…”

By the end of the show, after so many tribulations, after destruction, love, understanding his multiple personalities, emotions, origins and purpose, his conclusions are a call to action, to live a poetic revolution.

S04 E13, Hello, Elliot

This whole time I thought that changing the world was something you did

an act you perform

something you fought for

I don’t know if that's true anymore

what if changing the world is just about being here

buy showing up not matter how many times were get told we don't belong

by staying true even when we're shamed into being false

by believing in ourselves even when we’re told were too different

and if we ALL held on to that

if we refuse to budge and fall in line

if we stood our ground for long enough

just maybe

the world can’t help but change around us

even though we’ll be gone

is like mr robot said

we'll always be a part of elliot anderson

and we'll be the best part

because we’re the part that always showed up

we're the part that stayed

we're the part that changed him

and who wouldn’t be proud of that
